WORKING SKETCHES & PREPARATORY DRAWINGS BY HULDRICK
The drawings and sketches on this page are taken from my working sketchbooks.
I always like to have a sketchbook to hand when out and about. It is interesting to observe people and capture quick sketches of them going about their daily business.
It is a great discipline to sketch people naturally in the wild so to speak. You never know when they are going to move or get up and go so speed is the essence.

When on my travels I like to have a small sketchbook to hand. My favourite drawing tools are a soft water soluble pencil a water brush (brilliant tool) and an A6 hardback sketchbook. I bind these together with a velcro strap and it slips easily and inconspicuously into a pocket.

I sometimes carry a few basic watercolour pencils or some tubes of Gouache for added colour.
This make for simple colour sketches done at speed on location.
During a recent Sketching trip to Perranporth, North Cornwall I produced most of my sketches using gouache and water soluable pencil.
I like the movement in the first sketch (left) and I am currently trying to work this up into an oil painting in the studio. More on that in the work in progress page.
After a day of strong wind and rain I went for a clifftop stroll and watched the sea. That evening I spent tyring to note down in paint what I had observed that day.
■ HONFLEUR · NORMANDY · Sketching Trip · November 2010
In November I visited Honfleur in Normandy currently high on my list of places to paint and sketch.
The town is really beautiful whatever time of year you chose to visit. I first came here in July 2010 and have been back several times since. Lovely.
