The Huldrick Studio & Gallery - Hastings

The Huldrick Studio & Gallery is the working studio and exhibition space of Hastings artist and photographer John Huldrick Wilhelm. One of the first of the new wave of artists setting up independent studios and galleries in what has now become the creative quarter of Hastings Old Town. Huldrick has been painting in 1066 country for over 30 years and has a unique style that brings a real sense of place to his watercolours.

The gallery - located at 29 George Street in the heart of Hastings Old Town - opened in October 2004 and exhibits Huldrick's popular range of limited edition prints of Hastings and the South of England and many original paintings of Hastings and the surrounding area in oil, acrylic and watercolour. It also provides visitors with an opportunity to meet and purchase work directly from the artist.

The gallery also now features a display of Huldrick's photos of Hastings and the surrounding area. These images are proving very popular with visitors and provide another angle on Huldrick's image of Hastings. Each month we feature the best of the recent images as "Photo of the month".

Rebel Gallery

The Huldrick Studio and Gallery has been renamed Rebel Gallery. The gallery at 29 George Street has been redecorated and is now open. The striking new gallery features a larger selection of Jon Wilhelm and Suzanne Powell's original paintings in oil, acrylic and watercolour as well as the limited edition prints and photographs that have been so successful.

The Huldrick Studio & Gallery website will continue to offer the limited edition prints of Hastings but visitors to the gallery will now find Rebel Gallery at 29 George Street.

Having just been to see the Senna movie it brought back many memories of my earlier F1 paintings and so I thought it would be nice to feature some on the home page for a while. I produced many F1 paintings during the 1980's and 1990's with what I believed to be a unique airbrush style. Hope you enjoy having a trip down memory lane with me...

SeaEscape Five
Original painting oil on three canvas panels by Huldrick (each panel size: 16" x 40" overall size: 40" x 50")

Number Five in my SeaEscape series of studies of the movement of waves across sand at low tide based on observations made on my walks to the studio along Hastings beach.

I decided to call this series of paintings SeaEscapes because of their calming quality. Gazing into one of these paintings transports you to a place you can almost hear the sea!

This painting measures 40" x 50" overall and is currently on display in the gallery. It is the first in the series to be executed in oil. I usually choose to work in acrylics because of the speed of working but just at the moment I am enjoying the subtlety of working in oil.

Wave

This painting kind of made itself. I often start a canvas by scumbling some colour to kill the white. In this case I was left with the clouds almost as they are here. I simply developed the clouds a little and then decided to add the wave as the feature. Although the composition is a little unconventional I think it works.

Cornish Beach Scene

Original oil painting of a typical Cornish beach scene. I was particularly pleased with the sky which gives a great impression of an impending or receeding rain shower. This is an example of the scenes I currently most like to paint.

These collectable limited edition giclée prints are taken from original pen and ink watercolour paintings of Hastings by local artist Huldrick. Live painting in the street

During the summer months you will often find me bringing me easel out into the street. This adds a fantastic European feel to the streets of Hastings Old Town. It is also a great way to break down the barrier berween artist and viewer

Visitors and passers by can see me at work on one of the paintings that will later be displayed in the gallery.

THE STADE · HASTINGS

This month I bring you an experimental photo taken at the Stade in Hastings. The object of the exercise was to capture the movement of the clouds on a very blustery day. It involved waiting around fo just the right cloud formation to appear to get the composition right. I could have waited all day in vain but with the sky moving fast I actually dindn't have to wait too long. Hope you like te result. I am planning some more experiments along these lines soon. Watch thios space!
